How to Grow Mushrooms with a Kit

Setting up a Mushroom kit

Follow along with Mary as they show you how to get your mushroom grow kit set up for success in 4 simple steps:

  1. Open your kit
  2. Slice an X in the bag
  3. Spray the kit 2-3 times daily
  4. Harvest and repeat!

Tips for getting started

After you receive your Spray and Grow Kit and carefully remove the front panel, check to see that the kit inside is intact. Sometimes they\’re jostled in transit and break apart – but not to worry! Gently press it together and let your kit sit for a few extra days to recoup before opening up the bag. You\’ll soon see the mycelium, resilient as ever, bouncing back from its trip to your home.

Speaking of mycelium – that fuzzy, white stuff growing on your kit isn\’t mold! That\’s the vegetative form of a mushroom, known as mycelium. What that looks like for different species can vary: blue oyster can have yellow orange droplets, pink oyster can have a rosy hue, golden oyster is thick and white, and lion\’s mane is light and wispy!

If you live in a dry or arid climate, it\’s a good idea to cover your kit with a humidity tent to help keep moisture levels high. Take a trash bag or other large loose bag and cut lots of ½” holes throughout – mushrooms need fresh air to form correctly! Drape the bag over your block and mist the inside of the bag every day. When you start to see baby mushrooms form (pinning), you can remove the bag and keep misting the block.

Harvesting and Cooking your Mushrooms

Here, We walks you through the lifecycle of mushrooms from their initial beginnings to full maturity. For example, if a mushroom is picked while it\’s young, they will be tender and juicy. But if they\’re not harvested until fully mature then they\’ll taste more woodsy and mustier in texture. What goes into one\’s recipes is important but how it\’s prepared also matters, so although we may all love BBQ-flavored sauce and meals that are BBQ in name only, these recipes don\’t necessarily showcase how to handle an actual barbecue since taking your mushrooms with the right approach is essential.

Preparing your harvest

Get ready for some mouth-watering morsels! When you grow your own mushrooms, you\’re getting the freshest food possible. Not only are they delicious, they\’re packed with protein, vitamins, and minerals. Use them as a substitute for meat or pair them to elevate the umami on your plate.

There are many techniques for cooking mushrooms, but Louie outlines the ones we keep coming back to in the video above. All oysters can be prepared the same: trim off any leftover substrate or tough stems, chop, and sautee. Remember to use plenty of your fat of choice and don\’t crowd the pan. Cook longer than you\’d expect to get a good sear and finish with salt (and cream or coconut milk with white wine if you\’re feeling fancy). Lion\’s mane have a lighter flavor and texture similar to crab. Often, they retain a lot of moisture, so we like to press them before cooking to get a good crisp
